Switching electricity and gas supplier in Italy: a guide for residents

If you live in Italy you can switch electricity and gas supplier on the free market whenever you like. Switching is free, no engineer visit is needed and your supply is never interrupted: the meters and the grid stay the same, only the company that bills you changes. The new supplier handles the termination with the old one.

What you need

• Your POD code (electricity) or PDR code (gas), printed on your bill.
• Your Italian tax code (codice fiscale) and the account holder’s details.
• An IBAN if you choose direct debit (often comes with a discount).

What to check in a deal

• Fixed or variable price: fixed protects you from increases for 12–24 months; variable follows an index (PUN for electricity, PSV for gas) plus a margin.
• The annual standing charge (quota fissa): it matters a lot if you use little energy.
• How long the price lasts and what happens afterwards.
• Any conditional discounts (paperless billing, direct debit) and early-exit fees.
• The scheda sintetica, the standard summary sheet every supplier must publish.
